MGCC SA Visit to Strathalbyn - Nov 2020

We parked out the front of Gilbert’s and Mike who had arranged the visit, directed us to the entrance.  He told us that the idea was conceived by local motoring enthusiasts and their web site says, “The work we do at Strathalbyn Tourism Association (a non-profit volunteer run organisation) is aimed at bringing visitors to Strathalbyn and putting smiles upon the faces of all – visitors and locals alike. We aim to showcase the best Strathalbyn and surrounds has to offer. The Museum is one part of that – a beautiful property, with a huge history, put back to work, as a base for motor enthusiasts, families, car clubs, local market and community groups.”

It is a small museum with lots of soul.  As you enter, an old office on the right has been turned into a Glen Dix display, showcasing much of Glen’s memorabilia from his days as starter of the Australian Grand Prix in Adelaide, SA. There is a wonderful model of the GP track that was retrieved from an enthusiast’s kitchen table.

The displays are colourful with old benches covered in old tools, engines, oil cans, motoring signs and hubcaps.  There’s even a mannequin dressed in overalls, holding a spanner while peering under an open bonnet.  The volunteers have set up a meeting room and library with a TV showing videos of the Great Race at Bathurst.  Do you remember when Kevin Bartlett rolled the Channel 9 Camaro on the Channel 7 telecast in 1982?  Talk about reminiscing!
